(8:15 a.m. ET) Stranded teenager rescued in Tampa, Florida

(8:00 a.m. ET) Buncombe County, NC, ‘Seek Higher Ground Immediately’
Those in low-lying areas of Buncombe County, North Carolina, where the city of Asheville is located, were asked to seek higher ground immediately.
In an advisory alerting to a flash flood emergency, the National Weather Service said, “Emergency management reported widespread catastrophic flooding resulting in damage to infrastructure and inundation of countless homes and businesses.
Emergency managers request that those in low-lying areas seek higher ground immediately. Potential for life-threatening landslides is greatly increased.”
(7:45 a.m. ET) Flooding At Tampa General Hospital Site
Online reports indicate a parking garage at Tampa General Hospital in Florida is flooding. The video shared with X showed the flooding with audible alarms ringing in the background.

(7:35 am. local time) Flash Flood Warning for Metro Atlanta
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a new flash flood warning for Metro Atlanta. The first was issued at 7:07 a.m. ET for Midtown, College Park, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Forest Park, Riverdale, and Jonesboro.
He second, ten minutes later at 7:17 a.m. ET was issued for Mechanicsville, Tucker, Doraville, Chamblee, Clarkston, and Stone Mountain.
(7:30 a.m. ET) Haywood County
North Carolina is facing flooding. Do not attempt to drive. Do not enter the water, a Facebook post said: Move to higher ground to evacuate.
Officials said some people in the county who needed life support were unable to contact emergency services.
“Most parts of Wood are out of power if not already,” Alison Richmond, Haywood County public information officer, told The Weather Channel.

(7:15 a.m. ET) Homes Reportedly Demolished In Cedar Key, Florida
Cedar Key firefighters waded through heavy water in the dark to assess Helen’s damage. According to initial reports, several buildings were damaged or severely damaged. Strong winds can affect the region.
A hardware store, a market, a post office, and a firehouse are said to have all been destroyed.
Cedar Key Fire Chief Robert Robinson wrote from his personal Facebook account: “Slow down wherever it’s safe.

(7:00 am ET) Tampa officials assess the damage
City officials issued a “significant update” around 6:00 am ET. First aid assesses the damage as the sun begins to rise. So far, police and fire departments have responded to the following calls in Tampa, Florida, related to Helen:
-78 evacuations or water rescues
-46 downed lines
-56 road closures
-3 fire or medical requests
-19 missing traffic signals
-12 downed trees
Residents are advised to shelter in place until further notice. Officials say specialist vehicles have been dispatched to respond to calls as some roads are impassable to normal traffic.
(6:25 a.m. ET) Emergency services suspended in Liberty County, Georgia
In a Facebook post, officials with the Hinesville Police Department in Georgia said emergency services have been temporarily suspended due to the arrival of Helen “The city of Liberty has suffered greatly from Hurricane Helen.
Photos show residents being transported from the resort by boat. According to ABC News, about 11 people survived the complex, some of whom refused to leave.

(5:50 a.m. ET) Many rescue efforts are underway in Crystal River
A reporter on the scene in Crystal River, Florida, says “dozens” of residents have been evacuated from their homes due to the large amount of stored floodwaters.

(5:40 a.m. ET) Pinellas County 911 ‘Very Busy’
According to the Pinellas County, Florida Department of Emergency Management, 911 operators are “very busy” and are responding to “hundreds of fire and water rescue calls in the building .”

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said a state of emergency and activated the National Guard and emergency water rescue teams.
(4:30 AM ET) 2.2 million without power
In Florida alone, approximately 1.2 million homes and businesses are without power, e according to PowerOutages.us. Georgia and South Carolina have 650,000 and 240,000 enrollments, respectively.
Before Helen, officials warned that power outages could last up to a week in some of the worst-hit areas.
(4:00 AM ET) Deaths confirmed in Florida and Georgia
Authorities have confirmed one death from the storm in Tampa, Florida, where a falling sign hit a car. Two more deaths were reported in Wheeler County, Georgia when a mobile home was demolished by the storm.
